Google Fiber to the Home Program

Greater Corning Area Application

Southern Tier Central is proud to submit an application on behalf of the Greater Corning Area.  Residents and municipal leaders understand the positive impact the Google 'think big with a gig' project will have on these communities: the Town of Erwin, City of Corning, Town of Corning, and the Town of Big Flats.

Corning Incorporated has offered to donate cable and passive equipment manufactured by Corning Incorporated for fiber to the home (FTTH), if Google selects the Greater Corning Area for inclusion in this project.  Furthermore, Corning Incorporated will support Google in network design, alternative deployment techniques, and with innovative products such as indoor distributed antenna systems. This community should be selected for inclusion in the Google Fiber to the Home program because our area represents a unique collaboration opportunity for Google and Corning Inc.

Previous Telecommunications Project Success

In 2002, working with STC, Verizon through its diffusion fund awarded $2.35 million in equipment and infrastructure to create a high-speed network in the region to allow information access and sharing, multi-media communication, and on-line services delivery, all with a higher bandwidth than was ever available in this region, for a fraction of the market rate. Gigabit Ethernet was available to the partnering agencies, which in the Greater Corning Area involved the schools.

To be awarded this grant, STC had to successfully demonstrate that this region works as a unit--that many entities can come together to focus on a project that will benefit the entire region. This area can again work together to make Google’s project a success, one that is deployed quickly and efficiently.

The contract signed between Verizon and the partners is coming to its end date, and the new Verizon rate will be beyond what the partners can afford. The involved agencies, including the schools, want not only to maintain but also to improve their service and are seeking new partners to make that a reality. Google would be an excellent partner.

Corning Incorprated, a strong supporter of this application, is a user, provider and innovator of cable distribution methods.

A great many installation techniques have been used in our community: aerial, trenching, boring, micro-trenching, plowing, and rock saw have all been used in this area for the installation of other networks. Aerial is the most common method; the next most common technique is pulling cable through installed conduit. The use of micro-trenching and rock saw are very rare here, but Corning Inc. is an innovator in micro-trenching.
